Yeah I'd been told that the odds were good but I was warned that the goods were odd

Well you can tell by looking I like home cooking, I don't put on any airs
I get my kicks with the hoi polloi, I don't mingle with the millionaires
I'm not too proud or vain, don't know the word ‘abstain,’ don't need no fancy pants facade
But man alive, you know it weren't no jive, the odds were good but the goods were odd

So when every face in the whole damn place gave me a smile and a nod

There's no point repeating all the dirty details, it's a story that you know well
