lyrics

The Odds Were Good
©Cliff Westfall 2018

Well I was wondering why my throat was dry and my luck was so far down
So I went into this little place I knew out on the ragged edge of town
Where I'd heard the path to love, it was a great wide promenade
Yeah I'd been told that the odds were good but I was warned that the goods were odd

Well you can tell by looking I like home cooking, I don't put on any airs
I get my kicks with the hoi polloi, I don't mingle with the millionaires
I'm not too proud or vain, don't know the word ‘abstain,’ don't need no fancy pants facade
But man alive, you know it weren't no jive, the odds were good but the goods were odd

But mama always said boy, now when you're in Rome, you gotta do just like a Roman
And out in old Muskogee, you've got to make them think that you're an Oklahoman
So when every face in the whole damn place gave me a smile and a nod
Well what could I do, you know the odds were just too good though the goods were odd

There's no point repeating all the dirty details, it's a story that you know well
Let's just say something less than pride's why you won't hear me kiss and tell
But when you're on the path to love, you're gonna see that it's well trod
You know, it's understood, if you don't you should take the odds when the goods are odd

about

Cliff Westfall New York, New York

New York-based, Kentucky-bred country songwriter Cliff Westfall writes songs about heartache, loss, addiction – you know, funny songs. Or he can dive into a sentimental weeper.

He delivers them all with the wit that, for Westfall, is central to country music. His songs are bitingly acerbic, dependent on the twisty puns, bittersweet humor, and turns of phrase that used to define country music.
